HOW IT BEGAN

The Salvation Army was founded in London in 1865 by a Methodist minister, Rev William Booth (1829-1912) and his wife Catherine (1829-90). The Christian Mission, as it was first called, was dedicated to spreading the Christian gospel and meeting social needs. In 1878 the name was changed to The Salvation Army and William Booth became known as the General. The new name and structure led to a period of rapid expansion in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Booth was an evangelist and a social reformer. His book In Darkest England and the Way Out (1890) presented a blueprint for the provision of shelter, training and employment for the 3 million people who lived below the poverty line. This became the foundation of the Army's social services in the UK.

By the time of William Booth’s death in 1912 The Salvation Army was working in 50 countries.

WHAT IT DOES NOW

The United Kingdom
The Salvation Army (Registered Charity No 214779)has over 800 corps (churches) which do much the same as we do here at Canton. They are centres for worship, evangelism and community service.

The Salvation Army in the UK is also the largest and most diverse non-government provider of social services.

This provision includes hostels for the homeless, a family tracing service, addiction services, children's homes, adolescent centres, elderly people's homes, counselling services, employment training centres and prison visitation services.
